Wayne Lee Smith, Sr. was a remarkable individual whose life touched the hearts of many. He was born on June 1, 1935, in San Augustine, Texas, to his beloved parents, Clarence Lee Smith and Ruth Balch Smith. Wayne's journey in life was filled with diverse experiences, and he excelled in various professions.

Throughout his career, Wayne showcased his dedication and compassion as he served others. For thirty years, he worked as a Funeral Director's Assistant, providing solace and support to grieving families during their most difficult times. Wayne's commitment to service extended beyond the funeral industry. He also served as a Deputy at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department for several years, where he demonstrated unwavering integrity and public safety.

In addition to his work in law enforcement and funeral services, Wayne lent his skills behind the bar as a bartender at Holiday Club and Mickey's Pub. With his friendly demeanor and welcoming smile, he created a warm and inviting atmosphere for patrons who enjoyed their time in his company.

Wayne's military service played an integral role in shaping his character. He proudly served in the United States Army, embodying discipline and patriotism with honor.

Outside of work, Wayne had several hobbies and interests that brought him immense joy throughout his life. One of his favorite pastimes was visiting casinos to play Mississippi Stud. The thrill of the game and lively atmosphere were always sources of excitement for him. Wayne also loved spending Saturdays watching college football games with enthusiasm. His passion for the sport was infectious to those around him. Another passion close to his heart was indulging in old John Wayne western movies; he would lose himself in their timeless tales of adventure. Wayne could also be found on many mornings at the Waffle House enjoying a himself a good breakfast which he always said was the most important meal of the day.

On December 8th, 2023, Wayne Lee Smith, Sr.'s journey on Earth came to an end in Orange, Texas – leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished forever. Even though we mourn his loss deeply, we celebrate the vibrant life he led and the remarkable impact he had on those around him.

Wayne is survived by his adoring children: Robin Smith, Lisa Alvis and her husband, Greg, Jana Searcy and her husband, Bret, Angela Gollihare and her husband, Ricky; his son, Wayne Lee Smith, Jr and his wife, Jennifer., and his brother, Berle Smith and his wife, Rose. Wayne leaves behind a profound legacy of love through his nine beloved grandchildren and a host of loving great-grandchildren.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Lee Smith and Ruth Balch Smith; his brother Bobby Smith and sister Helen Harvey.

To honor Wayne's memory, family and friends have organized several services. First, a visitation will take place on Friday, December 15th, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Melancon~Levingston Funeral Home in Nederland located at 1605 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas. Following the visitation will be the funeral service beginning at 6:00 PM at the same location.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday afternoon, December 16th, 2023 at Thomas Cemetery in San Augustine. The service will begin at 1:00 PM.

Wayne Lee Smith Sr.'s life embodied compassion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. His legacy will forever live on in the hearts and minds of all those fortunate enough to have known him. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary individual, let us remember him not only for the remarkable things he accomplished but also for the love he shared with everyone he encountered along his journey called life.
