Shirley M. Funderburk, a beloved figure of her community, passed away on January 26, 2026, in Groves, Texas, at the age of 95. Born on September 22, 1930, in Port Arthur, Texas, she was the cherished daughter of Oland and Laudie Chambers.
Shirley dedicated an impressive 43 years of her life as a Postal Clerk at the Groves Post Office, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to her profession and the public she served. She enjoyed keeping in touch with her friends at the post office. Her career was marked by a steadfast dedication to her work, and many will remember her warm smile and friendly demeanor.
Beyond her career, Shirley was known for her nurturing spirit and love for gathering with family and friends. She found joy in simple pleasures, such as walking with friends at First Baptist Church in Groves and afternoon coffee get-togethers. She was always eager to share moments of laughter and camaraderie. She enjoyed looking at the moon every morning and at night. Up until 3 years ago, she enjoyed working in her yard. She loved being outdoors and staying active, not one to sit around. She would drive to Lufkin to visit her stepson and family and to Oakhurst to visit her son and grandson.
In caring for others, she not only nurtured her own family but also played a vital role in helping raise her siblings, a proud accomplishment that showcased her dedication and love. She leaves behind her stepdaughter, Darla Speicher, and stepson, A. J. Funderburk, Jr. (Linda). Shirley's legacy continues through her grandchildren, Nicholas Funderburk (Hailey), Ricky Speicher (Marie), Kimberly Capps (Steve), and Tracy Funderburk, and she is survived by numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish their memories with her. Additionally, she is survived by her brother, Royce Chambers, as well as nieces and nephews, particularly Debbie Chambers, Catherine Scion (Danny); and Linda LaSalle.
Despite the loss of her beloved husband, A.J. Funderburk, Sr., her son Richard Alvin Funderburk, her son-in-law Vernon Speicher, her granddaughter Katy, and her siblings Don Allan Chambers, Edward Dale Chambers (Evelyn), Patsy Sue Chambers, and Barbara Faye Echart (Jimbo), Shirley's spirit will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those she touched throughout her life.
