Raymond David Avila, a beloved Reading Teacher at Central Middle School in Nederland for 15 years, bid a peaceful farewell on August 9, 2024. Born on July 15, 1934, in Huntington Park, California, Raymond passed away in Port Arthur, Texas. He was a dedicated educator and a proud veteran who served as a Naval Aviator (LCDR) in the USN and retired after 20 years of dedicated service.
During his earthly journey, Raymond found joy and fulfillment in various roles and activities. He spent 44 years as a cherished resident of Port Arthur, where he made countless cherished memories. An active 44-year member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Port Neches, Raymond played a pivotal role by serving as senior warden for four terms and lending his voice to the church choir. Additionally, his commitment to community service shone through his active participation in the Port Arthur Founders Lions Club, where he held the esteemed positions of President, Vice President, and Zone chairman across several terms.
Raymond's passion for nurturing young minds extended beyond the classroom, as evidenced by his closest relationships. His wife of 64 years, Jane Avila, stood by his side as he fought the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's/Dementia for 10 years. He is survived by his son Mark Avila of Nederland, son Matthew Avila of Port Arthur, daughter Mary Beth Bourg and her husband Conroy of Nederland, along with four grandchildren: Emily Bourg Wright (Colton), Erin Bourg McCall (Mitch), Elise Bourg, and John Avila. His legacy of love also extends to his great-grandchild, Cooper McCall.
In the loving embrace of eternity, Raymond Avila reunited with his parents, John Avila and Emelina Valencia Avila, as well as his brother, Capt. John Avila (U.S.N) and his beloved first cousins Sonny, David and Rita.
Beyond his professional and military achievements, Raymond enjoyed simple pleasures. He cherished moments spent with his grandchildren. He loved to read and if he was seated, he had an open book in his hand. He and Jane shared many exciting adventures through their love for travel. Family camping trips, cross-country road trips, European and Mexican vacations and many cruises with a group of dear friends and family.
A Memorial Service, celebrated by Rev. Cliff Rucker will celebrate Ray's well lived life. It is scheduled to take place on August 14, 2024, starting at 4:00 PM and concluding at 5:00 PM, at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church located at 2425 Nall Street, Port Neches, TX 77651, United States.
