Mark Wayne Lawson Sr.
With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Mark Wayne Lawson Sr., who departed from this world on June 13th, 2023. Known for his tireless work ethic, love for family and friends, zest for life, passion for golf, and legendary dance moves, Mark left an unforgettable impact on this world.

Mark was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 20th, 1959, to Joel and Sally Lawson, Mark entered this world with incessant curiosity and an infectious passion for life. He was a beacon of light, always radiating warmth and welcoming everyone around him. His genuine compassion knew no bounds, and he touched countless lives with his selflessness and unwavering love. Mark was a dyed-in-the-wool PNG Indian. We may be biased, but Mark was a true legend in the realm of PNG football. He relished in his glory days at PNG in the 1970’s and often spoke with great excitement about his rushing yards, touchdowns, and 1976 State Championship. Nicknamed “TD Lawson” by his teammates, Mark remained grounded, always acknowledging the contributions of his teammates and coaches for his success on the field. It is alleged that Mark was recently spotted around town wearing his 44-year-old letter jacket and Wampum beads. Upon graduation from PNG in 1977, Mark went to work for his father, Joel Lawson, as a heavy equipment operator at the family business, Lawson Equipment Rental in Groves, Texas. He took great pride in his work and provided for his family until the day he died. When he wasn’t working, Mark loved to spend time with his buddies on the golf course. During the 90’s, when the Pea Patch golf course was in its heyday, Mark would often play 56 holes a day on the weekend. During the week, he could be found hitting practice balls in an open field at Groves Elementary School until the sun went down. Mark met his forever sweetheart, Debbie, at the age of 14. They married in 1978 and have three sons together. Mark and Debbie’s enduring affection serves as a testament to the power of love and devotion between soul mates. Through the highs and lows, they faced life's challenges together, forging a home that was filled with warmth, laughter, and an unbreakable sense of unity. Family meant the world to Mark. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, Pappy, uncle, and brother. He coached all three of his boys in sports and trained them to work hard to obtain their goals. His unwavering love and hospitality were the pillars upon which his family stood. Mark created countless cherished memories with his loved ones, and those memories will forever be a blessing. Mark was baptized at First Baptist Church in Groves, Texas. His character was formed by his deep faith in God. Known for his humble spirit, Mark exemplified the teachings of compassion, forgiveness, and love. His magnetic personality drew people towards him. He possessed a unique ability to make others feel seen and heard, providing support, and understanding in times of need. His sense of humor, infectious laughter, and genuine smile could brighten even the darkest of days. Though Mark is no longer with us, we rejoice that his baptism has been made complete. As we face this unbearable loss, we find strength in our faith and the promise of the resurrection. Mark loved us, we loved him, and as the Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Corinthians, “love never ends.” Mark’s life, and untimely death, serve as a reminder that every moment, every person, every relationship is a gift, and it is in our hands to make the most of this one wild and precious life.

Mark is survived by his wife Deborah Lynn Golding Lawson, his son Mark Wayne Lawson Jr. and wife Rachel, son Chad Lawson and wife Angela, and son Tyler Lawson. His grandchildren include Daylin Lawson, Reagan Lawson, Berit “Roy” Lawson, Emma Lawson, and Grace Lawson. Mark is survived by siblings Randy Lawson and wife Bonnie Lynn Lawson, Harold Lawson and wife Bonnie Jo Lawson, Pam Lawson, and Melvin and wife Rachel Lawson.

A service in witness to the resurrection and in celebration of Mark’s life will be held at 3pm on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Groves. Visitation will begin at 2pm. The service will be officiated by the Rev Chad Lawson and the Rev. Dr. Joe Worley.

May God grant Mark eternal rest. May light perpetual shine upon him. And may he rest in peace and rise in the light of God’s glory.
In loving memory,
