Leona Joyce Rovira, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on October 17, 2025, in Port Arthur, Texas. Born on January 14, 1937, in Jennings, Louisiana, Leona brought joy and light to the lives of everyone she encountered throughout her remarkable journey.
Leona dedicated 18 years to her career as a Receiving Clerk at Bealls Department Store, a testament to her strong work ethic and commitment to her community. After her retirement, she embraced life fully, cherishing every moment with her family. Her love for traveling, especially to Louisiana to enjoy Cajun bands, reflected her vibrant spirit and passion for life.
Throughout her life, Leona touched countless hearts. She was a former member of the Cajun French Music Association, showcasing her deep appreciation for music and culture. As a den leader for Cub Scouts Pack 232, she mentored young boys with kindness and patience, always striving to make a positive impact. Leona also shared her time and heart as a dedicated volunteer at the Hospitality Center, helping those in need with open arms and an understanding soul.
Leona is survived by her son, Ed Martinez III and girlfriend Tracy of Swansea, Massachusetts; her daughter, Kristina Phelps and husband Murry Phelps Sr. of Nederland, Texas; and her son, Richard Wayne Rovira and girlfriend Amanda of Nederland, Texas. She took great pride in her grandchildren: Eddie Martinez IV, Matthew Hoyle, Murry Phelps Jr., Aaron Phelps, Kacie Phelps, Erica Rovira, and Kyler Rovira, along with her eight cherished great-grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Leona also leaves behind her sister, Faye Miller of Jacksonville, Florida, with whom she shared a special bond.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 33 years, Richard William Rovira; her daughter, Jacqueline Martinez; her brother, Larry Miller; and her sisters Dewanna Evans, Delma Kline, and Lou Ella Paul. Their memories will forever be a part of her legacy.
Leona’s life will be celebrated on October 22, 2025, beginning with a visitation at 12:00 PM at 1605 Avenue H, Nederland, TX. The Rosary will follow at 1:30 PM, leading into her Funeral Service at 2:00 PM, all taking place at the same location. She will be laid to rest at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches, Texas, with the burial scheduled for 3:15 PM.
Leona Joyce Rovira’s spirit will remain alive in the laughter of her family, the melodies of Cajun music, and the memories of a life filled with love. She will be dearly missed, yet always remembered as a bright light who shared her kindness, joy, and passion for life with those fortunate enough to know her.
