John Arthur “Jack” Mertens, born on May 24, 1939, in Springfield, Ohio, peacefully passed away on June 15, 2026, at his home in Port Neches, Texas. A man of dedication and warmth, John’s life journey was marked by his steadfast commitment to his family, his cherished career, and his passions.
John devoted many years as a Civil Draftsman at Star Enterprise (Formerly Texaco) of Port Arthur, where his skill and precision were highly regarded. Beyond his professional pursuits, he was an avid genealogist, passionately tracing the threads of his family’s lineage and preserving their stories for future generations. John’s love for antiquing complemented his scholarly interests; he proudly owned an antique shop with his wife, Carol at Larry’s Antique Mall in Winnie, a testament to his keen eye for history and the treasures of the past.
His life was enriched by the joy of traveling alongside his beloved wife, Carol, with whom he shared countless adventures and memories. Though Carol Estes Mertens and his daughter Jo Ann preceded him in death, John’s legacy lives on vibrantly among those who survive him.
John is mourned and remembered lovingly by his daughter, Jennifer Lynn Mertens; his stepsons Kenneth Lamb, James Minchew, and Raymond Fisher, together with Raymond’s wife, Marie; his stepdaughters Cynthia Luquette and her husband Keith, and Janet Flanagan. His extended family consists of numerous grandchildren, including Anastacia Gordon, Ashley Page, Marah Fisher, Jenn Griffith & children, Jami Johns & children, Toshia Minchew & daughter, Sandra Ruth & children, Robert Flanagan & children, Sharon Hayball & children, Everett Minchew, and several other great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom carry forward his spirit and stories.
John was also predeceased by his parents, Henry and Margaret Mertens, and his four brothers and two sisters, underscoring the deep roots of his family heritage that he cherished so deeply.
The community and family will gather to honor John’s memory at a Graveside Service held on June 27, 2026. This solemn occasion will commence at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 11:00 a.m., under the Gazebo at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, 618 Block Street, Port Neches, Texas 77651.
