Jerry Wayne Sterling, 76, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, in Port Arthur, Texas. Jerry was born on November 19, 1948, in Port Arthur to Lawrence Washington Sterling and Velma Mary “Pete” Laurents Sterling, Jerry lived a life full of heart and dedication to family.
A lifelong resident of Port Neches, Texas, Jerry was known for his deep love of sports and his unwavering support for local athletics. He graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 1967, where he earned all-district honors in both basketball and baseball. Though he dreamed of a career in professional baseball, it was his exceptional talent on the basketball court that earned him a scholarship to Blinn College in Brenham. He later continued his basketball career at Lamar University.
After college, Jerry began a 33-year career with the City of Port Neches, retiring in 2005. Even after retirement, he remained active in the community, playing intramural softball and volunteering with the Optimist Club. He found joy in fishing, beach outings, and spending time with friends at the Silver Fox.
Jerry’s generous heart and love for his family were evident in the way he supported his nieces and nephews by being present at their games and being present for them when needed as the beloved “Uncle Jerry.”
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Washington Sterling and Velma Mary “Pete” Laurents Sterling; his twin brother, Gary Layne Sterling; his sisters, Patsy Galaviz and Lydia “Dianne” Ward; and his nieces, Andrea Sterling and Jennifer Winget.
Jerry is survived by his older brother, Rodney Sterling; his younger brother, Bobby Sterling and wife Lisa; and his first-generation nieces and nephews: Lisa Mallet Roccaforte, Carol Mallet Hebert, Amy Sterling Rainwater, Brook Sterling, Charles Galaviz, Rebecca Lynema, Larry Sterling, April Sterling Keith, Billy Kempf, Missy Sterling, Callie Rouly, Megan Marie Sterling, Emily Sterling, Nate Sterling, Julie Guidry, and Matt Haynes. He also leaves behind 26 great-nieces and great-nephews who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and loyalty.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 PM, at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 1605 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas, 77627. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park 618 Block Street, Port Neches, Texas.
