Jeanne Elizabeth McElwee

Jeanne McElwee, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2026, in Nederland, Texas. Born on April 1, 1967, in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana, Jeanne brought a unique blend of warmth and generosity to all who knew her. Her life reflected her caring, giving nature, always eager to lend a hand and make a positive impact on those around her.

​Jeanne met the love of her life, Scott McElwee, in 1987 in the front pews of A Church of Jesus. They married September 1, 1990. Together, they enjoyed 36 wonderful years and built a home that brought warmth and comfort to those who visited. Their marriage is a testament to what God can do when two people fully devote themselves to following Jesus and each other.

​Jeanne’s passions were as diverse as they were heartfelt. Her kitchen was often filled with the delicious aromas of her baking and cooking. She lovingly prepared meals, enough to feed “an army,” which was a true reflection of her boundless hospitality. Board games and card games, especially Uno, were a source of much laughter and friendly competition among family and friends. She found immense joy in the quiet contemplation of reading and the creative expression of writing. Jeanne had beautiful handwriting and loved to journal and write down Bible memory verses. Jeanne also loved fine art and poetry. Jeanne also found a special kind of happiness near the water. Some of her fondest moments were spent swimming in Texas lakes, rivers, and swimming holes. She especially loved quiet moments reading on the beach, long hours floating down the Frio River, and full days of fun on the lake at Ebenezer Park Swim Beach on lake Sam Rayburn. She enjoyed vacations in the RV camper and loved camping with friends and family.

​Jeanne was more than just the hobbies and experiences she enjoyed. She has been called a “second mother” to many, calling many of her children’s friends her little “chicadees.” She created a home welcoming to many people–always an open door, often ready with a cup of hot tea or coffee and good conversation.

​Jeanne became an unofficial advisor for many people. Jeanne was a wise counselor and used her transparency and God-given testimony to inspire and encourage others to trust in Jesus. Jeanne was a homeschool mom, and enjoyed not only teaching her kids at home, but also participating in local homeschool co-ops and homeschool field trips. She freely gave of her time, often assisting in editing papers and books for various people. Through her own experience of care-giving for several family members, Jeanne was able to help many people navigate the challenges that come with caring for their own loved ones. Many people have recounted the wealth of knowledge she gave and the patience she showed when helping others through challenging times.

​Jeanne’s life took a hard turn in early 2023 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Though tragic, this diagnosis NEVER caused her faith to waver. These past three years, her faith became most evident, marked by unwavering calm and assurance that the Lord was doing a work in her life exactly as He wanted it to be. Even when her mental state declined, she was still assured that Christ Jesus had a perfect plan for her life.

Jeanne’s legacy of love and kindness lives on through her devoted family and all the wonderful friendships she made in her lifetime. She is survived by her loving husband, Scott McElwee, who was her steadfast companion and partner in life’s journey. Her memory will be cherished by her son Jason McElwee, her daughter Erin Chamblee and her husband Bret, and her daughter, Julia McElwee. Jeanne became a new doting grandmother to Kasen Scott Chamblee, an immense joy, and she eagerly awaited the arrival of her granddaughters Adilynn Elizabeth Chamblee and Penelope Iris Van Hook. She also cherished her honorary grandchildren Amelia Rose, Sierra Violet, and Lincoln Joel Van Hook.

​Jeanne was preceded in death by her beloved parents, John and Gayle Blake, and several beloved friends and family who have undoubtedly welcomed her with open arms. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit of generosity, her infectious laughter, and her unwavering love will continue to inspire and comfort her family and friends. Jeanne lived a life full of purpose, compassion, and joy, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
