James A. Butaud

January 8, 1949 — August 19, 2025

Beaumont, Texas

James A. Butaud, a cherished member of the Fannett community and beloved family man, passed away on August 19, 2025, in Beaumont, Texas. Born on January 8, 1949, in Port Arthur, Texas, James lived a full life dedicated to family, friends, and community.

After proudly serving in the United States Army, James embarked on a remarkable career at Gulf Oil, where he devoted over 40 years of service. His professional journey was marked by a strong work ethic and a genuine commitment to his colleagues. Upon his retirement, James turned his energies towards nurturing his community as a Texas Master Gardener, teaching others the joys of cultivation and sharing the fruits of his labor, often bringing fresh vegetables to friends and neighbors alike.

James was a man of many passions. He was known throughout the community for his love of fireworks, proudly earning the affectionate nickname "Pyro Paw Paw," delighting family and friends with dazzling displays. His enthusiasm for crawfish boils, barbecuing, fishing, and duck hunting brought warmth to gatherings and created lasting memories.

Family was at the heart of James's existence. He took immense pride in attending the dance recitals of his daughters and granddaughter, fostering their talents and supporting their endeavors. Equally, he cherished watching his son and grandchildren participate in sporting events, as well as attending football games where he enjoyed seeing his grandchildren perform with the band. His love for music, particularly classic rock, filled family gatherings with joy and nostalgia.

James's legacy is that of a compassionate mentor and community volunteer, evidenced by his dedication to coaching with Nederland Little League baseball and portraying Santa Claus at various parades and events, including those with the Port Neches Police Department and Chamber of Commerce. These contributions reflect his desire to bring happiness to the community and love to all who were privileged to know him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Ann Butaud of Fannett, and their loving family, which includes his daughters: Lorri Payne and her husband, Terry of Austin; Michelle Diffee of Dallas; Bree Hinds and her husband, Richard of Beaumont; and Mandi Butaud and fiancé Justlin Hollier of Groves. His son, Chris Thigpen and wife, Kerri of Austin exemplified the familial bonds James held dear. His spirit also lives on through his grandchildren: Taylor Payne, Lexy Payne, Parker Payne, Price Payne, Tanner Diffee, Micah James Diffee, GeriAnna Diffee, Camryn Thigpen, Chase Ryan Butaud and his wife, Natalie, Courtlynn Butaud, Cambree Sanders, Chloe Roark and her husband, Nathan, and Cayson Sanders, as well as his great-grandchildren, Zoey Simon and Riley Butaud.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Lois Butaud, and his brother, Larry Julian Butaud. He leaves behind a tapestry of cherished memories woven through the lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, donations in James’ memory can be made to Cajun Navy 2016, PO Box 977
