Harriet Soape

January 31, 1929 — January 5, 2026

Nederland, Texas

Harriet Ann Soape, a devoted wife to her husband, Allen Perry Soape, Sr. for almost 60 years, passed away on January 5, 2026, in Nederland, Texas, at the age of 96. Born on January 31, 1929, in Port Arthur, Texas, she lived a life filled with love, laughter, and devotion to her Lord Jesus Christ and to her family.

Harriet was born to Edna Cain and Clifton Joseph Alegre as the oldest child with five siblings. At age 15, she met and married Perry Soape on March 24, 1944 just prior to

Perry joining the US Navy. She often told of her first train ride alone, at age 15, from Nederland, TX to San Diego, California to meet her groom on his completion of Basic Training. This newly wed couple came home to Nederland near the close of WWII to begin their family and enjoy their long and blessed marriage together.

Harriet was not just a mother and homemaker; she was a nurturing force whose love knew no bounds. She cherished her family deeply, creating countless memories that would be fondly remembered by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Her son, Allen Perry Soape, Jr., and his wife, Joy; along with her daughters, Louann Soape, Gay Soape, Kathy Covey and her husband, Mark were blessed to have been shaped by her unwavering love and support. Harriet took immense pride in her grandchildren: Gina Soape; Jonathan Covey and his wife, Sarah; David Covey and his wife, Esther; Katie Covey; Bethany Collins and her husband, Ryan; Micah Covey; Susanna DeLadurantey and her husband, Jonathan; Lydia Covey and Josiah Covey. Moreover, her lineage extended through numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed to experience her vivacious spirit.

A member of Calvary Baptist Church of Nederland since 1957, Harriet contributed her time and talents as a Women's and Children's Sunday School teacher, imparting wisdom and kindness to many. Her love for cooking was legendary—she was known for her wonderful recipes, which she enjoyed passing down through the generations.

Harriet is survived by her sister, Laura Mae Allen of Lufkin, Texas.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Perry Soape, Sr.; her parents, Clifton and Edna Alegre, Sr.; her daughter, Louann Soape; her baby sister, Lois Rae Alegre; and her brothers, Clifton Joseph Alegre, Jr., Gene Alegre, and Glynn Alegre. These losses served to deepen her resilience, which remained unwavering throughout her life.

The funeral services for Harriet will be held at Calvary Baptist Church located at 2515 Canal Avenue, Nederland, TX, on January 10, 2026. Visitation will commence at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM.
