Gladys was born June 14, 1933, in Easterly, Texas, the fourth of six children born to Walter and Mae Hughes.  She was a member of First Baptist Church, Port Neches.  She loved being active in her church, serving as director of Women’s Missionary Union for 20 years at First Baptist Church, Port Neches. She taught children in Sunday School for many years.  She also loved visiting and fixing meals for friends, especially when ill.

She was blessed to be able to travel to the Holy Land three times, the best trips she ever made. She and Alton also traveled extensively in their travel trailers and motorhomes to all 50 states in the US, Mexico for mission trips and monthly camping trips with the Orange Gator Sam club.  She enjoyed her employment.  She began working in the Robertson County Courthouse during the summer after graduating from Franklin High School in 1950.  She worked for a couple of years, then she moved to Bryan and worked at Texas A&M College for a few years.  While in Bryan, she met her husband, Alton Godley, in 1954.  After a few years, she moved to Beaumont with her friend, Millie Peters, and she worked for Prudential Insurance Company. In May 1955, she married Alton Godley.  He moved to Beaumont and worked for Texas U.S. Chemical for 30+ years. They were thankful and blessed with three beautiful and healthy children.  In 1956, Mark Alton Godley was born; in 1962, Cheryl Ann Godley was born; and in June 1967, Darla Susan Godley was born.  They loved and enjoyed each one. In 1972 after Darla started school, Gladys started to work for Jefferson County in the agricultural extension service.  She transferred to the treasurer’s office in 1981 and worked there for eight years.  She transferred back to the extension service in 1989 where she finished her career with the county.  She retired in 1993, to spend more time with Alton, who retired in 1989.  They had 11 wonderful years of retirement together, before Alton passed away in 2004.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mae Hughes of Easterly, Texas, and four brothers and one sister; husband, Alton Godley; and, daughter, Cheryl Godley Estes.

Cherishing her memory are her two children, Mark Godley and wife, Nancy, of Port Neches and Darla Budd and husband, John, of Longview.  She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Cory Godley, Kristin Godley, Ashley Moore, Alyssa Murphy, Whintony Estes, Joseph Estes and Grace Estes; seven great-grandchildren; special friend, Hugh Holcombe; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She had a very blessed life with such a sweet family and so many wonderful friends. She was looking forward to being reunited with loved ones who passed before her and meeting her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
