Gary Allen Porter, born on November 21, 1958, in Nederland, Texas, passed away on August 3, 2025, in Groves, Texas. He leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service, profound kindness and a kind spirit that touched the lives of many.
Gary began his illustrious career in law enforcement at the tender age of 18, serving first as a dispatcher for the Nederland Police Department, followed by a brief stint at Port Neches PD before transitioning back to the Nederland Police Department as a patrol officer, where his steadfast dedication enabled him to transition through various roles culminating in his appointment as Chief of Police in 2018. He proudly served the citizens of Nederland and his fellow officers until his retirement in May 2025, after an incredible 47 and a half years in law enforcement. Gary was known for his commitment to public service and care for those around him, both in his professional and personal life.
In addition to his distinguished career, Gary was known for his big heart and nurturing personality. He was reliable, selfless and treated everyone equally. With a gentle manner and generous nature, he connected with others, never meeting a stranger and always willing to lend a helping hand to friend and stranger alike. His kindness and honesty were hallmarks of his character, and he was beloved by family, friends and countless others whose lives were shaped for the better through his unwavering compassion and model of integrity.
Away from work, Gary was a man who found comfort in life’s simple routines. On weekends, he and Tonya could be found enjoying local pizza, live music or sharing their favorite meal at Texas Roadhouse, where they were warmly welcomed by name and friends were eager to serve them. Throughout his life, he cherished the outdoors—early days spent deer hunting and fishing, and most recently, looking forward to retirement at his newly purchased property in east Texas.
Gary is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Tonya Summerlin Porter, his daughter, Hannah Broussard and husband, Monty; stepchildren, Callie Summerlin; Sheigh Rhodes and husband, Derek; Luke Summerlin and wife, Michelle. His legacy will live on through his granddaughter, Guinevere Broussard, and his step-grandsons, Trent and Brett Summerlin and Jack and Jet Rhodes.
Gary is also remembered fondly by his brothers, Johnny “Mike” Porter (Linda) and Tim Porter (Cindy), as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, W.L. and Lillie Porter, who instilled values of service and compassion that guided him throughout his life.
A visitation honoring Gary will take place on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., followed by a service to begin at 12:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church-Nederland located at 1911 Nederland Avenue. Interment will be held at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches, Texas.
Gary Allen Porter will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his unwavering dedication to his community, his kind heart and the indelible mark he left on the lives he touched.
