Gary "Bo" Gates, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and respected craftsman, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, in Port Arthur, Texas. Born on July 27, 1941, in Alexander, Louisiana, Gary’s life was marked by his dedication to family, his beloved work as a carpenter, and cherished pastimes that reflected his grounded and generous spirit.
Mr. Gates served as a carpenter at Hinson Construction, where his skill and tireless work ethic stood as a testament to his commitment to his craft and his community. Beyond his professional life, Gary found joy in the simple pleasures of fishing and gardening, pursuits that echoed his deep appreciation for nature and tranquility. His friendly visits to the casinos were also among the activities that brought warmth and camaraderie into his life.
Gary's enduring legacy is carried forth through his loving family. He is survived by his beloved spouse, Cherry Jones Gates of Port Arthur, Texas, whose partnership was a cornerstone of his life. His children include Brian Gates of Hemphill, Texas; Wendy Culpepper of Port Arthur, Texas; and Gina Matson of Port Neches, Texas. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom remember him with affection and respect.
The bonds of family extended to numerous nieces and nephews, who hold fond memories of their uncle Gary, as well as to his sister, Maudine White of Port Acres, and sister-in-law Nancy Self of Orangefield, Texas. The loss of his son Shane Gates, and sisters Ginger Goats and Dale Simon, together with brother-in-law Tom Self, preceded Gary, each remembered with love and sorrow by those who remain.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Kathy Smith with Home Health, along with the devoted Harbor Hospice Nurses, for their compassionate care and support during Gary’s final days. Special thanks are also extended to Kaylee, Summer, and Alexis, whose kindness and assistance were deeply appreciated by all who loved him.
Gary "Bo" Gates leaves behind a legacy of hard work, devotion, and the quiet strength of character. His life, steeped in traditional values and enriched by the love of family and friends, serves as an inspiring example for all who knew him. He will be remembered with honor and affection, his memory treasured for generations to come.
