Eddie Wayne Elkins, a devoted family man and a respected law enforcement officer, passed away on December 2, 2024, at the age of 68 in his hometown of Nederland, Texas. Born on August 23, 1956, Eddie lived a life marked by service, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family.
Eddie began his illustrious career in law enforcement at the young age of 18, becoming one of the first officers hired by the city of Port Arthur. He served dutifully for 18 years at a federal agency, embodying the principles of justice and commitment to the community he cherished. Eddie’s contributions to law enforcement were not only defined by his professional achievements; he was also actively involved in local sports, becoming an official and sharing his passion for athletics with others.
In addition to his commendable career, Eddie was a loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Jacqueline Elkins, and their four sons: Clinton Elkins and his wife Amanda; Cory Elkins, Joshua Schaver, and Patrick Schaver, and his wife Iracema. Eddie found great joy in coaching his sons' baseball and football teams, leaving an indelible mark on their lives through shared memories on and off the field.
Eddie’s legacy continues through his seven beloved grandchildren and one great-grandchild, each of whom enriched his life in countless ways. He will be missed by his brothers, Dan Elkins and his wife Geneva and Pat Elkins and his wife Moggie. He valued family above all, and his warmth and kindness are etched in the hearts of those he held dear.
Eddie is preceded in death by his parents, Lee Oliver and Lois Elkins, his sister, Jeanine Landry, and brothers Billy, George, and Mike Elkins. He also mourned the loss of his son Cody Elkins, a heartache that he bore with courage and grace.
Throughout his life, Eddie enjoyed working with his hands, finding pleasure in building and remodeling projects, as well as taking time to understand how things worked. His inquisitive nature and desire to create were hallmarks of his personality, reflecting his pride in what he accomplished throughout the years. Even after suffering a work-related injury 24 years ago, he never let it slow him down.
A visitation will be held in his honor on December 6, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service from 2:00 PM at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 1605 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas, 77627.
