A Jackson Stansbury

1928 ∼ 2009

A Jackson "Jack" Stansbury, 81, of Port Arthur, died on Saturday, December 12, 2009, in Christus St. Mary Hospital. Jack was the son of A.J. and Alice Stansbury and a lifelong resident of Port Arthur. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, Jack earned a degree in Architecture at Texas A&M University. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea then returned to Port Arthur to practice, earning his architecture certificate in 1957. For most of his career he was a partner in the firm Moore Stansbury & Vaught and was happiest working with congregations designing churches, though his projects ranged from private homes to school theaters. In 2006 this work was honored by the Southeast Texas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Associated General Contractors of Southeast Texas. He was passionate about the Aggies and the deep friendships that began in college lasted for the remainder of his life. He was an inveterate cartoonist, with Ann's calendar of the year's best a family tradition. He also had a lifelong love of dogsa feeling more than returned by generations of faithful companions. A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4:00p.m.-7:00p.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves. A memorial service will be held at 10:00a.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at the United Methodist Temple followed by burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Groves. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his daughter, Ann Deen, and her husband, Jim Deen, both of Plano, Texas; his son, Mark, and his wife, Gabi Behrens, both of Galway, Ireland; and his sister, Jean Witt, of Searcy, Arkansas. In the later part of his life his care-givers grew to be part of our family: Sabina Perez, Esmy Rocha, and Sandra Olaye. Memorial contributions in memory of Jack Stansbury to the Beaumont Chapter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

I've known and worked with Jack for many years. Not only was he a loyal client but also a good friend. I cherish the "cartoon" he sent me when I was recovering from surgery; it hangs on my office wall. Jack ALWAYS had a smile on his face and I will miss him greatly. My most sincere condolences to his family.

Jack was one of the finest guys in the world (just like his whole family). I have some wonderful memories in our neghborhood. I saved his cartoon letters from 1946-8. I remember that sailboat too.

He will be missed especially when Mel (Wheeze) and myself go to the house on Wednesdays to visit with Mary Ann. My sincere respect to the family at this time. Jack had a gentle humor that kept him many friends. We did not see a lot of each other after leaving Texas A&M, but when we visited Pt. Arthur and called on Jack he would take us to lunch at any number of small places in the area, and he knew and spoke to everybody. Jack will be missed.

Last time I saw Jack was at the June 2008 High School reunion. At that time Jack looked great with his big smile and bubbling personality. It saddens me to know he is no longer with us. We go back a long way. From all of the parties the neighbor gang had at the Stansbury's, to ice skating in Beaumont. Jack, Walter Cobb and I had a sailboat. Our trailer came loose from the car and rammed a parked car. Next day on the front page of the PA News "Sailboat hits car." We thought there was a little humor in it but Jack didn't think so since he was driving the car and it was his name in the article. In the summer of 1949 Jack and I drove to California. We traveled the coast, spent a week or so on a ranch and saw the lights of Las Vegas for the first time. I give thanks for many things that happen in my lifetime and knowing Jack and the Stansbury's was one of them. God bless you all.
